INFORMATION
Sonoma County Farm Trails is a California non-profit trade
association dedicated to the promotion of on-site direct
marketing
of locally grown or processed agricultural products. The
organization was conceived in 1972 by the Sonoma County Agricultural
Commissioner
and a small group of local farmers. Today, Sonoma County
Farm Trails is an active association of over 150 farmers
who practice
direct marketing by opening their farms to the public. It
has served as a prototype for farmer groups throughout the
nation. Farm Trails also plays an important role within the
Sonoma County tourism industry, since many of our members'
customers come from areas outside the county.
Fundraisers
for Sonoma County Farm Trails include the Gravenstein Apple
Fair, held in August each year. Farm Trails sponsors annual
Future Farmers of America (FFA) and Santa Rosa Junior College
scholarships to assure continued interest and participation
in local agriculture by local youth.
Sonoma
County Farm Trails is run by a volunteer Board of Directors
elected by the membership. The Programs Manager handles the
day to day operations and coordinates all projects and activities.
THE
FARM TRAILS SIGN
The large, colorful and well-recognized Farm Trails sign indicates
to the public that they are welcome at your place of business.
Potential customers will readily locate your farm when they
see the familiar sign. Members are expected to display the
Farm Trails sign and it is free with membership.
THE
MAP & GUIDE
The principle means of promoting the organization and bringing
new customers to members' farms is the colorful Farm Trails
Map & Guide, depicting members' locations, products,
services and hours of operation. Each year over 120,000+
maps are printed
and distributed throughout the county and the greater Bay
Area. Thousands of maps are also mailed upon request to
consumers
all over the nation. Additionally, maps and press kits are
sent to local and national newspaper and magazine feature
editors, writers and reporters.
All members are expected to obtain a regular supply of maps
from our distribution depots and make the maps available to
customers at their place of business.
THE
WEB
Becoming an increasingly efficient source for information,
the Farm Trails website is very popular with the public. All
members receive a complimentary listing on the Farm Trails
Web Site, along with a link to each member's existing web
site. A low-cost web "page" can also be provided
to further advertise member businesses.
VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES
Farm Trails depends upon the participation of its members
in all of its activities. While serving on committees, planning
and executing special events are the types of volunteer involvement
we seek. Representing Farm Trails at a trade show, fundraiser
or other special event is a worthwhile and enjoyable opportunity
to promote your own business, too.
The Farm Trails newsletter keeps members apprised of upcoming
volunteer opportunities. Members are asked to contact the
office when interested in participating.
